The truth is that knowing your hair type is the first and the most important step that could help you easily take care of your hair.

Our parent’s product recommendations were done in good faith, based on their experience. But the question is, do you have the same hair density and texture as your parents? Do they really know your hair type?

The 12 hair type classification

If you don’t know by now, there are a number of different hair types. Some people have slightly wavy hair, some have extremely twisty curls. Others have straight hair, while some have dead straight strands. It’s all a jumble. Isn’t there any sane way of classifying the type of hair? Actually, there are many. They are two major classification systems. The first with 12 hair types is made base on the family origin of the DNA. See the table chart below.

If you had noticed, on the hair type chart above, the number “1” to the number “4” indicates each group of hair textures, defined in three inner hair textures or sub hair categories with (a, b, c) symbols

Hair type classification by ANDRE WALKER

There is one basic way of hair types classification accepted worldwide. In the 1990s, ANDRE WALKER, the popular hairstylist for celebrities like Oprah Winfrey has created a more simple hair type classification system. It divides the 12 hair types classification into 4 subtypes and then breaks them down into further sub-types. Since then, the simplified system of hair by Andre Walker has been accepted and used worldwide. Discover the describe system below to help you classify your hair easily.

This hair category contains different kinds of straight hair, but the story doesn’t end here. You may be surprised to find out that there are three different types of straight hair. This divides the group into a further 3 groups, the same applies to other categories. see chart below

HAIR TYPE 1 — (STRAIGHT):

Type 1 hair is known as the most straight hair. Commonly found in Asian descendants. The hair is bone straight and generally oily. Since there are no curves or curls from the roots scalp of the hair to the end, there is a good amount of oil circulation going around the hair strand from top to bottom. Type 1 hair is known for the lack of volume, and too greasy.

Type 1A hair is thin silky hair with a very fine texture and a prominent shine. 1a hair texture is characterized by a general lack of volume and greasier, the hair looks too shiny and too fine and soft compared to ( 1b and 1c ) hair texture. Since 1a is mostly oily, the hair strand also tends to become quickly dirty. Hooo! Get ready to wash greasy.

Type 1B hair is more textured than type A and is generally thicker.1b hair is known for its little thickness and volume near its root compared to 1a hair. 1b hair has more body and the hair strands can easily hold curls. If you are a hairstyle lover, you can easily design sleek style, updos, or ponytails

Type 1C hair is more towards the coarse side this hair type is quite difficult. 1c hair texture, generally called coarser-straight is known for being more coarser and thicker, difficult to make curls compared to 1b hair texture. The hair tends to be frizzier, with a sign of puffiness since it has thickness. Hoo! Get ready to struggle.

HAIR TYPE 2 — (WAVY HAIR)

You might have seen wavy hair, but you would never have realized the many different kinds of waves. Generally speaking, wavy hair can be considered as halfway between curly and straight hair. Type 2 hair consists of ( 2a hair texture, 2 c, and 2 b), which is known as wavy hair. It has more thickness and volume than any straight hair in type 1 hair. The hair strand tends to naturally form a curve or the “S” shape.

Type 2A hair is basically fine and thin. This hair texture has a natural wave shape, it reacts extremely well to styling, and it is the finest texture of this category of type 2 hair. You can easily make your favorite hairstyle, either straight or curly. It contains loose waves.

Type 2B hair is in waves that tend to stick to the shape of your head. You can visually notice the prominent and defined formation of waves and the “S” shape. The texture is thicker than 2a, but the hair strands tend to get frizzier than 2a.

Type 2C hair is in waves that tend to frizz easily and are coarser than the previous two. This texture is characterized by loose spiral curls. The hair strands combined the texture of curly and wavy hair. It has a lot of volumes to manage. It is the most difficult hair texture to the style. The hair is coarse, with thicker waves, and the frizziest one of the categories.

HAIR TYPE 3 — (CURLY HAIR)

You took shower, your hair got wet, and after drying, the curls came back right away. your hair looks in spirals with prominent curve formation. There are many different definitions of curly. The curly hair that we include in the type 3 hair category has a specific “S ” shape pattern. Their cuticles aren’t flat which is why curly hair isn’t as shiny as the previous two hair types, but it does have a charm of its own.

Type 3A hair is in loose curls which shine outwardly. The “S” shape looks more defined and fine, giving the appearance of a fuller and healthier hair strand. easy to manage or make a blowout. But the hair tends to get frizzy.

Type 3B hair contains curls that can range from ringlets to adorable tight corkscrews. The curls look stretch-out, the hair is neither thicker nor fine. The hair has a combination of textures.

Type 3C hair has tighter curls than the 3B type, being more tightly wound and curled than the previous two types, make the hair look fuller. The hair-look like loose kinky curly hair.

TYPE 4 — (KINKY HAIR)

This tightly coiled hair can be a blessing for some and really unmanageable for others. This hair type is generally weak and vulnerable. Although it may appear as coarse, it is basically quite fine. Its thickness is due to the strands being packed together tightly. This hair type is the most common hair type found in African descendants. It has three subtypes.

Type 4A hair has tight springy having a general “S” shape when stretched following a definitive curly pattern. 4a hair strands generally have a mixed type 3 curly hair, with a kinky wiry soft texture.

Type 4Bhair contains coils that aren’t very well defined. If you stretch these curls out they tend to look a lot like a bent “Z” a zigzag type of curls. 4b is more fragile, has a variety of thicknesses.

Type 4C hair has extremely tightly wound coils. This hair type is more of an extremely kinky hair than anything, looking like an afro with hair strands formation of a “z”.
